With the school year starting up again many young college girls have the question on if they should join a sorority. But what is a sorority and why on earth should you join one?
In this post you’ll learn:
- What a sorority is
- Why you should join a sorority
- My sorority experience
What is a Sorority
Let’s start with the basics.
A sorority is a social organization of women that work towards supporting a philanthropy and a strong sisterhood. They are a part of colleges and universities across the US and Canada.
Sororities are typically a part of a larger Greek system that include fraternties for men, professional fraternities, and multicultural organizations.
Most of the typical sororities you think of are Panhellenic sororities (with an emphasis on social events and philanthropy) but there are also multicultural sororities (with an emphasis on culture and traditions).
Sororities are most often characterized by their different values, rituals, traditions, philanthropy, motto, symbols, and colors.
That’s why it’s super important to find your home away from home! Each sorority is different from one another. They also differ from campus to campus.
Why You Should Join a Sorority
Now for the reasoning to your question! Here is what I think you gain from being in a sorority.
Social Networking
A sorority is a great way to meet new people around campus, especially if you’re new to the school! Everyone is nervous to make friends after move-in, but if you join a sorority you are automatically thrown into a giant network of people!
These people will help you grow over your academic years and can even help you prepare for the post-collegian years.
I know so many sisters who have received job or internship opportunities just by knowing someone. In college you will learn that it really is who you know.
Leadership
Sororities have executive boards that help maintain all of the behind the scenes of the organization. There are often officer and director positions.
Members usually run for a position that they are interested in and that may tie in to their professional goals. For example, the philanthropy chair may have a strong bond to the chapter’s philanthropy and they may highly enjoy community service.
These positions help members develop valuable skills that they will need in a professional work environment.
Some of these skills are teamwork, time management, organization, and communication.
This personal development is something that is hard to find around campus if you don’t join a sorority!
Academic Support
Additionally, sororities often have an emphasis on academics. There is usually a minimum GPA that is required to join a sorority.
If a member drops below the minimum GPA they may be put on an academic progress plan and be unable to attend some social events.
This short ban from events is meant to encourage the member to prioritize their grades first (we are in college after all).
Sororities have study events, study buddies, and mentorship programs to encourage members to work on their education. How great!
Philanthropy (Community Service)
Each sorority has a philanthropy that they support. Most of them support philanthropies for certain disabilities, cancers, diseases, or common community struggles.
The members hold fundraising events that raise money and awareness for their philanthropy.
This can help members’ personal developments in that they are participating in something bigger than themselves when they join a sorority.
Lifelong Friendships
Last but not least, a sorority is a sisterhood! The women you meet are not just friends for four years, but for life.
These women will be there to support you throughout your ups and downs. They will be the ones at your wedding and life milestones.
Joining a sorority really is a special bond for a lifetime.
My Sorority Experience
For me, joining a sorority was essential for making my college experience more memorable.
Going to a small developing school, I felt like I needed to join an organization to have a solid social life.
It was a bit difficult for me to make friends due to starting college during COVID times. Masks were still required and everyone tended to stay away from one another.
As soon as I was eligible to go through recruitment…I did.
At my school, freshman aren’t allowed to go through recruitment until after their first semester. This meant that primary recruitment was in the Spring for us.
In the Spring of 2022 I went through primary recruitment and found my perfect match in my sorority.
Ever since joining I have been able to support my philanthropy by volunteering in my community, held leadership positions, met my lifelong friends, and participated in many social events like mixers and formals!
I couldn’t imagine my life without my sorority!
Most of my college memories have something to do with Greek life. I will forever be grateful to my organization!
