Hi, long time no see. Busy college student here.
Let’s be honest, your college years can be some of the greatest years of your life, but also the loneliest. While you may be surrounded by others all day, the moment you hit the sheets is when you start to realize how alone you really are, hence feeling lonely in college.
Now the point of this blog isn’t to offset the amazing things that come from college, but rather to talk about the feelings of loneliness that may accompany the plethora of opportunities that you receive.
Loneliness is to be expected, especially since it is usually the first time one is truly away from home. So how do we deal with it?
Table of Contents
1. Recognize it
Feel your feelings. You will only feel worse if you do not acknowledge the fact that you feel lonely. It is important that you do not push your feelings away. Instead, recognize them for what they are.
It’s okay to not feel great 100% of the time!
I would suggest writing down your emotions. You can do this is a journal or on the notes app in your phone. It can be as simple as a few words.
Just make sure you are thinking about how you feel and the possible reasoning for these feelings. From there you can start to find a solution.
2. Talk it through with family and friends
When you start to feel lonely in college it is important to try to surround yourself with others, whether that be friends or family. If you don’t have any friends or family near you, well, you’re in the right generation!
Thanks to technology you can be in touch with your loved ones with one tap.
If you have friends near you, that’s even better! Leave your dorm, house, or apartment and hang out with them.
I find that my mood improves when I leave my room and surround myself with the people I love. It helps me get out of my head to where I feel less alone.
Remember, true friends and family will want to help you when you are struggling, so don’t be afraid to talk to them.
3. Change the narrative
Additionally, try to get yourself out of your own mind. Maybe read a book or move your body.
Do something to stop yourself from spiraling into the abyss of loneliness.
Maybe catch up on some homework assignments or join a new club!
No matter what, put yourself out there so you can experience new things! There is always something going on on campus for you to meet new people or find a new hobby.
4. Seek professional help
Lastly, if none of these solve your problem and you can’t seem to stop yourself from getting devoured by the loneliness…seek help.
By now, every campus should have free mental health resources for their students. Whether it’s counseling, guided meditation, or education.
It is okay to not be okay. Everyone feels lonely in college at some point.
5. Embrace it.
If all else fails, embrace your loneliness.
Alone time can teach you a lot about yourself. And trust me, as a college student you have a long life ahead so it’s better to get comfortable now.
Every person should feel okay with being alone. Use this time to discover who you are!
